The branch of Worth Unlimited in Waltham Forest has been running since May 2000, developed from scratch by a group of concerned local Christians. The London Borough of Waltham Forest is in the North East of London and although the north of the Borough is suburban, much of the south is typically inner-city in feel. There are, however, as many problems of exclusion and disaffection among young people in the north as there are in the south of the borough suggesting that our aim to tackle the causes of exclusion are about more than just financial poverty.

Our team of qualified and experienced youth workers and social workers seek to be flexible and innovative in the way we work with young people to tackle the issues they encounter.  We strive to take that same flexibility into our partnerships with other agencies and funders in order to help them meet their identified needs as well.   An example of this is our recently developed partnership with the Parish of Walthamstow which led to a new Community Outreach Worker being employed to work in a difficult area in Walthamstow.

We are keen to continue developing our existing and new partnerships in order to ensure that young people are able to make successful transition to adulthood and welcome approaches from interested organizations.

Impact

Jack stopped attending school in year 10 saying that what he was doing there wasn’t interesting him. He was given an opportunity to join an alternative education programme but he did not give this much of a chance and quickly dropped out. Jack was now seriously at risk of dropping out of any opportunity to fulfill his potential.

In year 11 as nothing appeared to be working for him, he was referred to Worth Unlimited and Heather started to meet with him and in a few months built rapport and trust with him as she started to help him think about engaging back into education.

We started doing ASDAN type projects and in particular Jack enjoyed doing a general car maintenance challenge with one of my colleagues working on his jeep. Jack said he enjoyed working with his hands and found it quite easy to break things down and fix them back to together so he did another challenge taking apart and repairing a peddle bike. As Jack was interested in a career in engineering, we spent sometime looking at what the job was about and how to get into that field of work.

Jack started to show a keen interest in doing a construction multi-skills course and so I mentioned a course with Inner London Training. Through continuing to support him, he made enquires about the multi-skills construction course that his older friend has been doing for the past year. I helped him make contact with the Inner London Training project to arrange an interview. Now without the pressure of having to do education Jack seems very enthused to get started and is looking forward to starting the ILT course in a few weeks.
